In Solidarity with People Living with HIV
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial continues to be the world’s oldest and largest grassroots mobilization campaign for international HIV awareness in the world, since 1983. It takes place every third Sunday in May and is led by a coalition of some 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries. AfA Singapore observes the Singapore AIDS Candlelight Memorial as part of this international movement.
With the advances in HIV management and treatment over the last decade, its purpose has evolved. Today, the memorial serves as an important event to remind people that HIV is still a serious issue and the fight against HIV and AIDS must continue.
The Singapore AIDS Candlelight Memorial provides opportunities such as:
- To commemorate loved ones who have lost their lives to HIV
- To show solidarity with people living with HIV
- To raise awareness of HIV within society
- To reduce HIV-related stigma and discrimination
- To reduce stigma and discrimination against key populations, including men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, sex workers and young people.
The Singapore AIDS Candlelight Memorial is a day to express solidarity with people living with HIV and their loved ones. In the same spirit, do consider making a contribution towards AfA’s Care for Family Fundraiser. Proceeds go towards families of persons living with HIV who are facing financial difficulties from medical fees. Until June 2026, all donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar under the Tote Board Enhanced Fundraising Scheme. Donations of $50 and above qualify for a 250% tax deduction.
