Communications Intern

AfA is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to fighting HIV, AIDS & Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) in Singapore. It draws upon a network of healthcare professionals, advocates, educators and volunteers, to implement educational, testing, treatment and welfare programmes. It has introduced numerous innovative projects and runs a broad range of educational outreach, HIV and STI testing, support and welfare programmes.

As we have partnered with Youth Corps Singapore and its Youth Corps Community Internship programme, an opportunity has arisen for a new Communications Intern to join our team. Brief Description

Imagine scrolling through your feed & seeing a chance to actually make a difference with your online skills. That’s what it’s like being an AfA Communications Intern, doing important work around HIV and STI awareness. You’ll be the go-to person for making sure everything we post looks sharp & keeping our online info fresh. Think scrolling Instagram while at work, & writing website content that actually get people talking about topics that might be taboo in Singapore.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

Communications role

    • Daily media monitoring for news relevant to AfA regarding HIV & STI to keep the work we do relevant and up-to-date
    • Contribute to the planning and conceptualisation of online content for further reach to different audiences
    • Generate online content, including copywriting, basic visual design, and video editing (advantageous but not compulsory if applicant is familiar tools like Canva, CapCut, Adobe Photoshop etc.)
    • Proofread online content such as web pages and social media posts before publication
    • Update website pages and posts as selected by the comms department
    • Explore different media tools available for communications purposes and enter data such as prices or features into resource document

Other programmes

    • Serve in different ad-hoc AfA outreach programmes in roles such as ushering, outreach education & logistics
    • Attend observation sessions at AfA clinical services before possibly taking shifts in roles such as reception, counselling or validating
    • Support the planning and execution of the AfA Gala Dinner 2025 e.g. guest communication, marketing materials, event coordination
    • Perform other duties during office hours as assigned by the Directors or other Managers

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  1. Develop practical digital communication skills: Gain hands-on experience in content creation (copywriting, basic visual design, video editing) for various online platforms.
  2. Understand sexual health behaviour, trends and their effect on public health: Learn how to effectively track relevant health news and trends and understand how this information informs public health messaging.
  3. Gain exposure to public health management: Observe and understand the operational aspects of a non-profit organization addressing public health issues (HIV/STI awareness), including outreach strategies and program implementation.
  4. Enhance teamwork and collaboration abilities: Contribute to team projects, participate in planning sessions, and work alongside experienced non-profit professionals.
  5. Improve organizational and event management skills: Support the logistical aspects of outreach programmes and contribute to the planning and execution of a large-scale event like the AfA Gala Dinner.

Duration of Internship:

    • 6 months

Daily Working Hours:

    • 10.00am – 7.00pm

Work Days:

    • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Minimum Qualification:

    • Polytechnic diploma or professional qualifications

Requirements

  1. Comfortable talking about sexual health behaviour and practices
  2. Adaptable with flexible working hours that might extend to weekday nights weekends for outreach if needed (relevant off in lieu would be provided)
