SINGAPORE’S PEOPLE LIKE US NOMINATED FOR BEST SHORT-FORM SERIES AT THE 2020 INTERNATIONAL EMMY AWARDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

24 September 2020

Singapore – Action for AIDS Singapore, Cheo Pictures and Pilgrim Pictures are
elated to announce that their second season of Singapore short form series, “People
Like Us” is the first from the island-nation that is nominated for Best Short-Form
Series at the 48th International Emmy® Awards. The series also represents Asia in
the category.

Following the lives of four gay men in Singapore, “People Like Us” is a poignant
drama about Isaac, Rai, Ridzwan and Joel as they navigate love, lust and life.

“I am super thrilled and happy about this nomination and that the series has struck a
chord with the judges at the International Emmys. This further validates my work to
represent the LGBTQ community on film and television.” said Cheo.

Pilgrim Pictures’ Lim added, “It’s such an honour and I’m greatly encouraged to
continue making such stories that need to be heard, seen and shared.”

Co-developed with Action for AIDS Singapore, the first season of “People Like Us”
screened at festivals around the world including NYC Web Fest, Rio Web Fest,
Roma Web Fest, and ITVFest (now Catalyst), sweeping up awards in Best Short
Drama at the ITVFest and Formosa Festival of International Filmmakers as well as
Best Supporting Actor at the 8th Indie Series Awards.

Sumita Banerjee, Executive Director of Action for AIDS Singapore says, “Action for
AIDS, Singapore is honoured and delighted at the nomination of our educational
drama series ‘People Like Us – S2’ for the Short-Form Series category of the 2020
International Emmy Awards. The drama series sought to increase awareness and
uptake of sexual health services by the gay community in Singapore in a sensitive
and yet entertaining manner. HIV and STI rates remain high among MSM in
Singapore and this was one of the ways in which AfA hoped to raise awareness in a
relatable manner within the community. This recognition will undoubtedly help us
reach even wider audiences globally.”

The series is available on YouTube and has been acquired by U.S. premium cable
channel HereTV, and over-the-top platforms like Gagaoolala and Dekko.
