Background
Launched in 2011, the Mobile Testing Service (MTS) is an extension and expansion of the Anonymous Testing Service (ATS) by Action for AIDS Singapore. The MTS provide anonymous HIV testing.

Testing Process | Schedule
STEP 1: INTRODUCTION
Our volunteers will be walking around where the van is deployed. Approach one of these friendly volunteers if you would like to find out more about testing, window periods, or information about HIV and other STIs.
Let them know if you would like to take a test, and they will help you through the next few steps.
STEP 2: REGISTRATION
You will be asked to fill up an anonymous questionnaire with your phone to help our counsellor understand you a little better. Once it is completed, the coordinator will direct you to proceed to the van.
STEP 3: COUNSELLING
Once you completed the anonymous questionnaire, screenshot the barcode given to you. That will be your unique identifier for the day. Proceed to one of the counsellors for counselling.
For the purpose of doing an HIV risk assessment, the counsellor will ask some personal questions about your sexual risk behaviour. Some notes may be taken down on the form, but this will remain anonymous & confidential. Rest assured that all information provided is kept anonymous & confidential.
You should take this opportunity to ask your counsellor any questions you have about HIV, safer sex or sexual health.
STEP 4: TESTING PROCEDURE
The pricker will then perform the test procedure:
Please show your barcode to the pricker in order for the pricker to know your identity.
Your finger will be pricked by the pricker to get a few drops of blood for the HIV test strip.
Only sterile and disposable equipment are used for this procedure, including gloves, needles, test strips, and cotton wool.
STEP 5: RESULT COLLECTION
Your test result should be ready in at least 20 mins.
Stay at the location to wait for result collection. Once the result is ready, you will be called to enter the van and be informed of your result.
You can also choose to leave your phone number or email for result notification.
The volunteer will answer any questions you have before you leave.
Linkage to Care: All clients who test positive are offered a Linkage to Care service. AfA facilitates the first appointment for the client at a public hospital in Singapore for HIV treatment and subsidises the cost of the first visit.
Window Period
The window period is the time between actual infection and the point when a test will reliably give an accurate result. Testing before the end of the window period may give you false negative results.
Test | Window Period |
HIV (4th Gen) Rapid Test |
14 – 90 days (2 weeks – 3 months) |
HIV (3rd Gen) Rapid Test |
21 – 90 days (3 weeks – 3 months) |
HIV Self-Testing Kit |
45 – 90 days (1.5 – 3 months) |
You are therefore able to do your HIV test at our clinic after 14 days (2 weeks) after exposure, then confirm your status once more at the 90-day (3 months) mark. If you are unsure, our onsite counsellors will advise you on the most appropriate tests for you.
AfA only uses HSA-approved tests with a very high degree of accuracy. Nonetheless, all tests come with a small chance of false results, and our services are not meant to substitute for medical advice. If in doubt, clients should consult their doctor for formal medical advice.
