Art Against AIDS 2006

First Published – 01 Aug 2006

Action for AIDS, Singapore (AFA) today announced the launch of this year’s national Art Against AIDS competition. This competition is one of AfA’s key events in their calendar of outreach and educational events. This year, and in keeping with the times, the competition has gone digital.

Art Against AIDS uses art to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and encourages community participation in HIV/AIDS prevention in Singapore – particularly among the youth.

For the first time, the competition will cover 4 categories: digital photography, animation, video and graphic design. Participants are encouraged to make a strong statement – and visual impact – about HIV/AIDS by creating their own original digital media works.

LAUNCH OF DIGITAL ART AGAINST AIDS COMPETITION 2006

SINGAPORE, 01 August 2006 – Action for AIDS, Singapore (AfA) today announced the launch of this year’s national Art Against AIDS competition.

Said A/Prof Roy Chan, President of AfA: “Since it first began in 1996, Art Against AIDS has received strong support from community leaders, local and international companies and prominent politicians. The use of digital imagery underscores our need to use the most current technology to scale up HIV education and outreach.”

Previous winners have had their work published in The Act, AfA’s newsletter. Furthermore, quality artwork have been utilised in AfA campaigns to communicate HIV/AIDS prevention messages. Their work can also be seen at www.afa.org.sg/artagainstaids, a web page that has been specially set up in conjunction with this year’s Digital Art Against AIDS.

“This year’s Digital Art Against AIDS aims to attract 500 entries – from school children, youth and adults; from budding and professional photographers, as well as designers and animation artists. We are very excited about this competition and have been greatly encouraged by the support we have been getting from several organizations including iShop by Club 21.” said the Chairman of the Art Against AIDS organising committee, Mr Prashant Somosundram.

Competition entries will be due in October and winners will be announced in late November. Prizes will be awarded to the winners at a public event held in conjunction with World AIDS Day in December 2006.

Winning entries will also be shown in a series of roving public exhibitions in venues such as The Hereen, Eastpoint Mall and other venues.
