WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY?

World AIDS Day is held on 1st December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.

WHY IS WORLD AIDS DAY IS IMPORTANT?

Over 7,140 registered cases in Singapore since initial documentation in 1985. Globally there are estimates 34 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, scientific advances have been made to HIV treatment and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, each year in Singapore more than 400 are diagnosed with HIV. People do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people with the condition.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds us, the community that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education,

Wear A Red Ribbon

On this day, every year AfA launches  Wear A Red Ribbon. This event takes place across the island to raise awareness and show support for people living with HIV.  On 1 December this year, people around the world will be pinning on their red ribbons as they commemorate World AIDS Day.

AfA too has organised an Awareness Flag Day event where we reach out to all parts of Singapore in full force – Flag collectors storm the island with donation boxes to raise funds to support the work we do. For every donation made, a Red Ribbon is given out.

The Red Ribbon has become an international symbol of solidarity and support for people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon is a simple and powerful way to challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding AIDS , increasing awareness of HIV and transmission and helping to commemorate the millions of lives lost as a result of the epidemic.

Make a contribution towards efforts of ending the AIDS epidemic.

Wear yours with pride this World AIDS Day.
