HIV up among gays and bisexuals

THE number of homosexuals and bisexuals here who tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) last year climbed to a new high.

The increase comes as overall figures rose 7.8 per cent, with activist groups and counsellors calling for more education across all genders and lifestyles.

Although the number of HIV cases from heterosexual transmission - which makes up the bulk at 54 per cent - has fallen from 255 in 2007 to 248 last year, the spread among homosexuals and bisexuals has spiked, rising by 16 per cent and 127 per cent respectively between 2007 and last year.

New HIV statistics released

THE number of new Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases reported last year reached a record high, according to latest statistics from the Ministry of Health (MOH).

A total of 7,944 sexually transmitted infections — including HIV — were reported last year, a slight increase of 2.4 per cent from 2007.

About 300 people turned up for an Aids candlelight memorial service held by community organisation Action for Aids last night.

Nine religious leaders led prayers for victims of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome during the service at the Singapore Management University, held in conjunction with the 25th International Aids Candlelight Memorial.

I applaud its work and would like to see more charities involved in this kind of outreach. I was dismayed, however, to see the picture that accompanied the story with the caption describing 'a handshake exercise, which shows how easily HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sex'.

Although the exercise is designed to illustrate how HIV can spread in a population through serial sexual contact among individuals, the use of the handshake analogy is unfortunate.

THE message is clear: Have unprotected sex, and it could be fatal. The risk of getting and transmitting HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunity deficiency syndrome (Aids), is a growing concern especially among transient workers here, who have little access to outreach programmes.

AIDS: 'Major advance' seen in revolutionary gene therapy

The world's largest experiment using gene therapy to combat the AIDS virus has yielded "a major advance," demonstrating that the technique is both beneficial and safe, scientists said on Sunday.

Data from an advanced phase of the test process confirms that the quest to use transplanted genes to roll back the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is valid, they said.
